OHSWEKEN, ONTARIO – Five-time and reigning World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series champion Donny Schatz has turned up the heat in the last two weeks. That continued Tuesday night at Ohsweken Speedway when Schatz blitzed the field winning by nearly seven seconds to pick up his 13th WoO triumph of the season and third in his last five starts.
“These STP guys are going a phenomenal job,” said Schatz, following his 137th career WoO triumph. “We’ve been working hard and having fun. Tonight, it was awesome to drive this car. Jack Elam from J&J Auto Racing was up here in Canada with us and he and his people build great cars. This one has been a thrill drive since we brought out for the first time last week at Williams Grove. I just wish we had a race tomorrow. That’s how fun this thing is to drive.”
Schatz qualified seventh before dominating the opening heat. He started fourth and finished second in the dash. The Fargo, N.D., racer tracked down early leader Jason Sides and used a low move coming out of turns three and four to grab the lead. Once in front, he set sail on a pace of his own circling the 3/8-mile dirt oval with a blistering pace. He didn’t slow down until he took the checkered flag for the second time in his career at the track. In eight races at Ohsweken, he has two wins, three seconds, a third, a fifth and a sixth.
“I want to thank Glynn Styers and his staff here at Ohsweken,” continued Schatz. “This is an awesome racetrack and they put on a great show here. We love coming up here and seeing all the Canadian fans come out to see us race. It was a lot of fun.”
Schatz will return to action Friday near St. Louis as the WoO regulars will travel to I-55 Raceway for the two-night Ironman 55. Friday there will be a complete program and Saturday’s main event is scheduled for 55 laps. Following the Ironman event all the focus turns to Knoxville for the 53rd running of the Nationals.
