LAS VEGAS, Nev. (February 27, 2019) – After last weekend’s events in Texas were canceled due to rain, the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series returns to action tonight, Feb. 27, and tomorrow, Feb. 28, at the Dirt Track at Las Vegas.
Donny Schatz and the Tony Stewart Racing No. 15 team enter the weekend with two top fives in the first two World of Outlaws events of the season, both coming at Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Fla.
Traditionally, the semi-banked half-mile clay oval has been a good stop for Schatz along the World of Outlaws tour. In 61 previous starts at the speedway, Schatz has an average finish of 7.13 with 12 wins, 27 top fives and 42 top tens.
Over the past three seasons, the 10-time World of Outlaws champion has been the man to beat in Sin City, visiting victory lane in four of the last six events.
Schatz’s win at the Dirt Track at Las Vegas last year came after a spirited battle for the lead with Sheldon Haudenschild. Schatz caught the Wooster, Ohio driver at the midway point of the race, but was patient in finding a way around him for the lead. With five laps remaining, Schatz struck as Haudenschild found himself stuck in the middle of the track. Schatz hit his marks on the bottom of the speedway to take the win and, eventually, the win.
Perhaps the most exciting victory for Schatz at Vegas came in 2017 when he and Brian Brown engaged in a thrilling late-race dash to the finish. It appeared as though Brown had the advantage and the preferred groove as the lead duo charged down the backstretch on the final lap. However, using the low side again, Schatz pulled even with Brown in the final set of corners and won the drag race down the front straightaway to the checkers.
DirtVision.com will have complete video and audio coverage of both nights of action.
