FARGO, N.D. (June 12, 2019) – The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series returned to the northland this past weekend. First up was a fan-favorite facility, River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, N.D., on Friday night.
Schatz has dominated the high-banked three-tenths mile oval in recent years. He swept both races at the track last year and has visited victory lane in seven of the last eight races at the venue.
The night got off to a good start for the 10-time and defending series champion as he timed in second quick out of 25 cars. Schatz lined up 11th on the grid for the 40-lap main event. Hot and windy conditions on Friday led to a drier than normal racing surface, which took rubber in the second half of the feature. Still, Schatz was able to move forward to finish in fourth.
On Saturday, Schatz came into Granite City Speedway in Sauk Rapids, Minnesota as the defending race winner. The Outlaws were making their first visit to the speedway since 2017. The driver of the Tony Stewart / Curb-Agajanian Racing No. 15 had a solid run going inside the top 10 but, unfortunately, he was credited with a 24th place finish after contact with the tricky and treacherous cushion caused suspension damage.
The Outlaws were also in action last Tuesday night, June 4, at Fairbury Speedway in Fairbury, Ill. Rough track conditions bit Schatz on the initial start, causing him to fall from fifth to ninth, but he was able to battle his way back to finish in the seventh position.
“It would have been great to get a win for all of our North Dakota fans at River Cities. My Tony Stewart Racing guys did a great job all night. We’ll be back to Grand Forks in August looking to get his Toco car back in victory lane,” said Schatz.
This weekend, Schatz returns to a track where he has had no shortage of success; Knoxville Raceway. The Brownells Big Guns Bash is set for June 14-15 at the Sprint Car Capital of the World. Schatz enters the weekend sitting second in the point standings, 12 markers behind Brad Sweet.
