FARGO, N.D. (August 25, 2020) – Donny Schatz returned to his home state this past weekend to compete with the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars. Schatz picked up a pair of top 10 finishes over the weekend, highlighted by a podium finish on Friday night at River Cities Speedway.
Thirty-two drivers were checked in for action for the Northern Tour at River Cities Speedway. Schatz missed out on a dash transfer position by one spot in his heat race, relegating him to a seventh-place start in the 40-lap feature. The 12-time River Cities Speedway winner slowly worked his way through the field, cracking the top three on the lap 29 restart.
From there, Schatz looked to close in on the lead duo of Kyle Larson and Logan Schuchart. Schatz was within striking distance of both competitors in the closing laps, but ultimately had to settle for third at the checkers.
“I don’t think we had the right combination here tonight,” said Schatz after the race. “That’s just the way it goes. When you get behind the eight-ball a little bit, you get way behind. My guys are doing an incredible job with what we have to work with. It’s a respectable finish. When you can’t win, I guess you have to work on the next best finish and tonight that was third.”
On Saturday, the Greatest Show on Dirt returned to Schatz’s home track, Red River Valley Speedway in West Fargo.
The semi-banked three-eighths mile was wide and racy for the 30-lap main event. Schatz started eighth on the grid and reached as high as sixth on lap 17, but finished in seventh to score his 24th top 10 of the season.
This weekend, the World of Outlaws continue their trek through the Midwest with visits to US-36 Raceway in Osborn, Missouri on Saturday, August 29th and I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Nebraska on Sunday, August 30th.
Schatz currently sits third in the point standings, 58 markers behind leader Logan Schuchart.
