FARGO, N.D. (January 26, 2021) – Donny Schatz and the Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing team opened their 2021 season last weekend at the inaugural Wild Wing Shootout at Arizona Speedway in San Tan Valley, Arizona.
The three-race weekend kicked off on Friday, January 22nd where Schatz turned in his best performance of the event. Schatz set quick time during qualifying and followed that up with a drive from fifth to second in the feature.
Schatz started as the only car in the top five running the low side of the speedway and was able to pick off cars one by one. The 10-time World of Outlaws champion moved his way into second and closed in on race leader Buddy Kofoid in the closing laps. As he approached slower traffic, Kofoid moved off the cushion, down to the bottom of the track just as Schatz was within striking distance.
Once he found the moisture on the bottom, Kofoid ran that line for the remainder of the race. Schatz was unable to find a faster line and went on to finish second over Carson Macedo.
Following a 10th place finish on Saturday, Schatz wrapped up the weekend with a sixth-place finish during Sunday’s finale.
“Last weekend was a good test for our team. We tried a few different things throughout the weekend and found out what the car liked and didn’t like,” said Schatz. “We needed to turn in better qualifying times the last two nights to be in the hunt. The one night we qualified well we ended up on the podium. That’s something we’ll be focusing on before the World of Outlaws season starts.”
Next up, Schatz will head east to Screven Motor Speedway in Sylvania, Georgia for the All Star Circuit of Champions’ opening weekend. This will be Schatz’s first appearance at the three-eighths mile oval.
In four starts with the All Stars in 2020, Schatz scored a best finish of fourth on February 6th at Volusia Speedway Park.
