SYLVANIA, Georgia (January 30, 2021) – Donny Schatz raced to his first sprint car victory of the 2021 season on Friday night at the All Star Circuit of Championships’ season opener at Screven Motor Speedway.
Schatz started fourth on the grid for the 30-lap, $8,000-to-win main event. Biding his time early, Schatz remained in the fourth position until leader Sheldon Haudenschild found trouble on lap six.
From there, Schatz remained patient in the third position behind Sam Hafertepe, Jr. and Tyler Courtney, respectively. Schatz moved into the second spot after Hafertepe, Jr. jumped the cushion in turn four at the halfway point, giving the lead to Courtney.
After trying to work his way by Courtney for nearly the entire race, Schatz finally found a way around the NOS Energy Drink No. 7 on lap 18 to take the lead.
From there, the 10-time World of Outlaws champion checked out to a four-second lead over Courtney. Unchallenged in the closing laps of the race, Schatz cruised to his 19th career All Star feature win.
“Hats off to this whole Carquest team. These guys have been digging,” said Schatz. “They tried some things to get the car better. These pre-season races are a good opportunity to try some things and it worked tonight. My guys are the ones who won this race, not me. I just went where the car in front of me wasn’t and it worked out. These guys had an awesome race car and it really was up to me not to give it away.”
The inaugural Sugarlands Shine Southern Tour for the All Star Circuit of Champions continues tonight, January 30th at Screven Motor Speedway. Fans can watch the event live on Floracing.com.
Schatz and the entire Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing team would like to thank all of their great partners for their continued support!
