FARGO, N.D. (June 10, 2021) – Donny Schatz made his season debut with the NLRA Late Models Sunday evening at Buffalo River Speedway in Glyndon, Minn., 15 miles east of his hometown of Fargo.
The event was his first local Late Model show of the 2021 season and his first visit to Buffalo River Speedway since 2016.
After moving forward from fifth to fourth in his heat, Schatz rolled out on the outside of row five for the 25-lap main event.
Temperatures approaching 100º and windy conditions all night made moisture on the tight quarter-mile oval a premium, making the low groove the dominant one for the majority of the feature. Still, Schatz worked his way up the running order, breaking into the top five in the first handful of laps.
The 11-time winner with the NLRA Late Models continued his trek forward in the second half of the race, working past Cole Babcock and Shane Edginton to move into a podium position.
At the checkers, Schatz crossed the line in third.
“It was great to get back behind the wheel of the Late Model. The NLRA is an awesome group of drivers and good guys to hang out with after the races. It’s awesome to see this track back in action again and to see such an awesome crowd in the stands,” said Schatz. The speedway was inactive in 2020 due to COVID-19. “We’ve got a number of other NLRA shows penciled in on our schedule and Sunday was a good way to kick off our local season.”
