FARGO, N.D. (July 27, 2021) – The World of Outlaws returned to the land of the Posse last weekend with a trip to Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, Pa. Donny Schatz picked up a pair of top five finishes, highlighted by a third-place effort during Saturday night’s finale.
Schatz began the Summer Nationals main event on Saturday night from the outside of the front row and rocketed out to the lead over Sheldon Haudenschild using the high groove in turn two.
After the first handful of circuits, fourth-place starter Brent Marks came forward to challenge Schatz for the lead, but the 10-time series champion kept the Pennsylvania native at bay.
Schatz continued to look strong through the halfway point of the 30-lap event, but lost the lead to Marks with 10 to go. While trying to mount a charge on Marks, Schatz lost second to Haudenschild.
On the following circuit, Haudenschild made contact with a lapped car to bring out the yellow.
Schatz restarted third and went on to complete the podium at the finish.
“We needed to be a little better,” said Schatz after the race. “Every lap, I was struggling more and more to keep the car straight. It’s just the way it goes I guess. You’re going to get passed when you’re like that. I guess we were pretty fortunate that we could hang on to third there and have a pretty respectable weekend.”
The caution that followed contact between Haudenschild and the lapped car took the leaders out of heavy lapped traffic. At the time, Schatz was running in third, but was still very much in the mix for the lead. Schatz said that caution did not help his chances to regain the lead in the waning stages of the race.
“I feel like if you’re in traffic, you force someone to move around. That’s what you need to win these races,” said the 21-time winner at Williams Grove Speedway. “If you’re not good enough on your own, you need the other guys to have to move around and change their line. We’ll just have to live with our result and be a little bit better next time.”
Friday night, Schatz started sixth on the grid for the 25-lap feature. Schatz quickly moved up to the fourth position, which is where he went on to take the checkers.
Schatz entered the weekend fourth in the standings, 248 markers behind leader Brad Sweet. After two solid top five finishes, Schatz currently sits 228 out of the lead, still in the fourth position.
This weekend, the World of Outlaws make their return to the Empire State with trips to Ransomville Speedway on Friday and Weedsport Speedway on Saturday.
Schatz and the entire Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing team would like to thank all of their great partners for their continued support!
