FARGO, N.D. (March 27, 2023) – It was a strong and consistent weekend for Donny Schatz and the Tony Stewart Racing No. 15 team in Alabama and Mississippi. Schatz scored top five finishes in both events to propel him from ninth to seventh in the point standings, just eight events into the season. 

Schatz’s top five finishes came as a result of consistent qualifying efforts. Schatz timed in eighth quick on Friday night at Talladega Short Track and sixth quick at Magnolia Motor Speedway, which resulted in third and second place finishes in heat race action, respectively. 

In an event that was plagued with cautions in the first half of the race on Friday night, Schatz drove from eighth to round out the top five at Tallageda. 

On Saturday, the series went next door to Mississippi for the Black Ice Brawl at Magnolia Motor Speedway. The top five were seemingly in a class of their own at the start of the feature as Schatz battled Brad Sweet, Sheldon Haudenschild, Carson Macedo and David Gravel. 

Schatz went on to score a fourth place finish for his fourth top five effort of the season. 

“It felt good to go out and have a few consistent runs last weekend,” said Schatz. “This Advance Auto Parts team keeps digging night in and night out and I feel like we are making gains. It was definitely nice to have some better qualifying runs which helped us throughout the rest of each night. Lately, we had been struggling in qualifying and nowadays its so hard to dig yourself out of a hole like that. 

“I’m really excited for this weekend. The half-mile tracks were our strong suit last year so I’m hoping it’s more of the same at Devils Bowl.” 

The series will return to the birthplace of the World of Outlaws this weekend for the Texas Outlaw Nationals, which will culminate on Saturday night with the $20,000-to-win feature.
