FARGO, N.D. (May 19, 2020) – Donny Schatz and the Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing No. 15 team made a rare appearance with the Bumper-to-Bumper IRA Sprints last weekend at Jackson Motorplex for the Great Lakes Shootout.
Two events were on tap at the four-tenths mile oval on Friday, May 15 and Saturday, May 16, however, Saturday’s event along with Sunday’s rain date were canceled due to rain.
Schatz got a great start to the evening on Friday night by setting the overall quick time in flight one with a lap of 13.257 seconds, averaging 108.621mph.
The 10-time World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series champion continued on to win heat one from the fourth starting position, then win dash one from the front row to earn the pole position for the 25-lap main event.
At the drop of the green flag, Schatz took command of the race lead but had his hands full with Ian Madsen. Schatz, staying true to the bottom, battled Madsen, who ran a car width and a half off the bottom, for the first seven circuits.
Schatz eventually pulled away from Madsen, but just as he did Sheldon Haudenschild moved his way up to enter the fray.
With 10 laps in the books, Schatz found himself mired in lapped traffic and searching for a clear groove on the speedway. Haudenschild took advantage and drove around the outside of the Fargo, N.D. driver as they came around to complete lap 11.
Soon thereafter, the track locked down around the low side of the speedway as Schatz cruised to a podium finish in the third position behind Brad Sweet and Haudenschild, respectively.
“We had a great car all throughout the night, but I just couldn’t find the feel I was looking for in the feature,” said Schatz. “I’m proud of the effort this Advance Professional team gave. Scuba, Brad, Jakob and Lannie all did a great job. Thanks to Jackson Motorplex and IRA for their hard work getting this event put together. We learned a few things for the Jackson Nationals later this year so I’m really looking forward to getting back to Jackson.”
The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars resume their schedule this weekend at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 in Pevely, Missouri. In his two most recent visits to the high-banked one-third mile oval, Schatz collected a pair of podium finishes, including a runner-up finish at the Ironman 55 last August.
Schatz currently sits fourth in the World of Outlaws standings, 18 points behind leader Logan Schuchart.
